Adobe Creative Suite CS is a discontinued software suite of graphic design , video editing , and web development applications developed by Adobe Systems. On May 6, , Adobe announced that CS6 would be the last version of the Creative Suite, [2] [3] [4] and that future versions of their creative software would only be available via their Adobe Creative Cloud subscription model.

Adobe also announced that it would continue to support CS6 and would provide bug fixes and security updates through the next major upgrades of both Mac and Windows operating systems as of The following table shows the different details of the core applications in the various Adobe Creative Suite editions.

Each edition may come with all these apps included or only a subset. Adobe Stock launched in Adobe sold Creative Suite applications in several different combinations called "editions", these included:.

Adobe Prelude and Adobe Encore are not released as standalone products. Adobe Encore is available as part of Adobe Premiere Pro.

In March , it was reported that Adobe would no longer sell boxed copies of the Creative Suite software, instead offering digital downloads and monthly subscriptions. Creative Suite helped InDesign become the dominant publishing software, replacing QuarkXPress , because customers who purchased the suite for Photoshop and Illustrator received InDesign at no additional cost.

Adobe shut down the "activation" servers for CS2 in December , making it impossible for licensed users to reinstall the software if needed. In response to complaints, Adobe then made available for download a version of CS2 that did not require online activation, and published a serial number to activate it offline. Adobe Creative Suite Production Studio previously Adobe Video Collection was a suite of programs for acquiring, editing, and distributing digital video and audio that was released during the same timeframe as Adobe Creative Suite 2.

The suite was available in standard and premium editions. Macromedia Studio was a suite of programs designed for web content creation designed and distributed by Macromedia. After Adobe 's acquisition of Macromedia, Macromedia Studio 8 was replaced, modified, and integrated into two editions of the Adobe Creative Suite family of software from version 2. Some Macromedia applications were absorbed into existing Adobe products, e. FreeHand has been replaced with Adobe Illustrator.

Director and ColdFusion are not part of Adobe Creative Suite and will only be available as standalone products. The final version of Macromedia Studio released include:. Adobe Creative Suite 3 CS3 was announced on March 27, ; it introduced universal binaries for all major programs for the Apple Macintosh , [19] as well as including all of the core applications from Macromedia Studio and Production Studio.

Some Creative Suite programs also began using the Presto layout engine used in the Opera web browser. Adobe began selling CS3 applications in six different combinations called "editions. The latest released CS3 version was version 3. CS3 included several programs, including Dreamweaver , Flash Professional , and Fireworks that were developed by Macromedia , a former rival acquired by Adobe in Adobe dropped the following programs that were previously included in CS2 from the CS3 software bundles: [22].

Adobe had announced that it would continue to develop Audition as a standalone product, while GoLive had been discontinued. Adobe GoLive 9 was released as a standalone product on June 10, Adobe Audition 3 was announced as a standalone product on September 6, Adobe had discontinued ImageReady and had replaced it with Fireworks, with some of ImageReady's features integrated into Photoshop.

Audition became part of the Creative Suite again in CS5. Adobe CS4 was also developed to perform better under bit and multi-core processors. Two programs were dropped from the CS4 line-up: Adobe Ultra , a vector keying application which utilizes image analysis technology to produce high quality chroma key effects in less than ideal lighting environments and provides keying of a subject into a virtual 3D environment through virtual set technology, and Adobe Stock Photos.

Below is a matrix of the applications that were bundled in each of the software suites for CS Following the release of CS5 in April , Adobe changed its release strategy to an every other year release of major number installments. The update helped developers optimize websites for a variety of tablets, smart phones, and other devices.

At the same time, Adobe announced a subscription-based pay service as an alternative to full purchase. Not all products were upgraded to CS5. Below is a matrix of the applications that were bundled in each of the software suites for CS5. On May 5, , during the opening keynote of its Adobe MAX conference, Adobe announced that it was retiring the "Creative Suite" branding in favor of "Creative Cloud", and making all future feature updates to its software now appended with "CC" instead of "CS", e.

Photoshop CC available via the Creative Cloud subscription service rather than through the purchasing of perpetual licenses. Customers must pay a subscription fee and if they stop paying, they will lose access to the proprietary file formats , [39] [40] which are not backward-compatible with the Creative Suite [41] [42] Adobe admitted that this is a valid concern [43]. Individual subscribers must have an Internet connection [44] to download the software and to use the 2 GB of provided storage space or the additionally purchased 20 GB [45] , and must validate the license monthly.

Adobe's decision to make the subscription service the only sales route for its creative software was met with strong criticism [47] [48] see Creative Cloud controversy. In addition to many of the products formerly part of the Creative Suite one product, Fireworks, was announced as having reached the end of its development cycle , [56] Creative Cloud also offers subscription-exclusive products such as Adobe Muse [57] and the Adobe Edge family, [57] Web-based file and website hosting, Typekit fonts, and access to the Behance social media platform.

New versions with major feature updates have been released regularly, with a refresh of the file formats occurring in October Adobe also announced that it would continue to offer bug fixes for the CS6 products so that they will continue to run on the next versions of Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X. Sometimes even applying patches or installing new versions does not automatically uninstall the old versions.

Security advisories from plug-in providers announce security-related updates. Secunia PSI [74] is an example of software, free for personal use, that will check a PC for vulnerable out-of-date software, and attempt to update it. Other approaches involve using firewalls and intrusion prevention systems to monitor unusual traffic patterns on the local computer network.

Users and programs can be assigned more privileges than they require, and malware can take advantage of this. For example, of Android apps sampled, one third of them asked for more privileges than they required. Some systems allow all users to modify their internal structures, and such users today would be considered over-privileged users. This was the standard operating procedure for early microcomputer and home computer systems, where there was no distinction between an administrator or root , and a regular user of the system.

In some systems, non-administrator users are over-privileged by design, in the sense that they are allowed to modify internal structures of the system. In some environments, users are over-privileged because they have been inappropriately granted administrator or equivalent status.

Some systems allow code executed by a user to access all rights of that user, which is known as over-privileged code. This was also standard operating procedure for early microcomputer and home computer systems. Malware, running as over-privileged code, can use this privilege to subvert the system.

Almost all currently popular operating systems, and also many scripting applications allow code too many privileges, usually in the sense that when a user executes code, the system allows that code all rights of that user.

A credential attack occurs when a user account with administrative privileges is cracked and that account is used to provide malware with appropriate privileges. Using strong passwords and enabling two-factor authentication can reduce this risk. With the latter enabled, even if an attacker can crack the password, they cannot use the account without also having the token possessed by the legitimate user of that account.

Homogeneity can be a vulnerability. For example, when all computers in a network run the same operating system, upon exploiting one, one worm can exploit them all: [81] In particular, Microsoft Windows or Mac OS X have such a large share of the market that an exploited vulnerability concentrating on either operating system could subvert a large number of systems. Anti-malware sometimes also called antivirus programs block and remove some or all types of malware.

A specific component of anti-malware software, commonly referred to as an on-access or real-time scanner, hooks deep into the operating system's core or kernel and functions in a manner similar to how certain malware itself would attempt to operate, though with the user's informed permission for protecting the system. Any time the operating system accesses a file, the on-access scanner checks if the file infected or not. Typically, when an infected file is found, execution is stopped and the file is quarantined to prevent further damage with the intention to prevent irreversible system damage.

Most AVs allow users to override this behaviour. This can have a considerable performance impact on the operating system, though the degree of impact is dependent on how many pages it creates in virtual memory. Because many malware components are installed as a result of browser exploits or user error, using security software some of which are anti-malware, though many are not to "sandbox" browsers essentially isolate the browser from the computer and hence any malware induced change can also be effective in helping to restrict any damage done.

Website vulnerability scans check the website, detect malware, may note outdated software, and may report known security issues, in order to reduce the risk of the site being compromised. Structuring a network as a set of smaller networks, and limiting the flow of traffic between them to that known to be legitimate, can hinder the ability of infectious malware to replicate itself across the wider network.

Software Defined Networking provides techniques to implement such controls. As a last resort, computers can be protected from malware, and the risk of infected computers disseminating trusted information can be greatly reduced by imposing an "air gap" i. However, malware can still cross the air gap in some situations, not least due to the need to introduce software into the air-gapped network and can damage the availability or integrity of assets thereon.

Stuxnet is an example of malware that is introduced to the target environment via a USB drive, causing damage to processes supported on the environment without the need to exfiltrate data. AirHopper, [92] BitWhisper, [93] GSMem [94] and Fansmitter [95] are four techniques introduced by researchers that can leak data from air-gapped computers using electromagnetic, thermal and acoustic emissions.

Chicago is its largest city, and the state's capital is Springfield ; other major metropolitan areas include Metro East of Greater St. Louis , Peoria and Rockford. Of the fifty U. With Chicago in the northeast, small industrial cities and immense farmland in the north and center, and natural resources such as coal, timber, and petroleum in the south, Illinois has a highly diverse economy. Owing to its central location and geography, the state is a major transportation hub : the Port of Chicago enjoys access to the Atlantic Ocean through the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence Seaway , and to the Gulf of Mexico from the Mississippi River via the Illinois Waterway.

Additionally, the Mississippi, Ohio , and Wabash rivers form parts of the state's boundaries. Chicago's O'Hare International Airport has been among the world's ten busiest airports for decades. Described as a microcosm of the entire United States, [7] Illinois has long been considered a bellwether in social, cultural , and political terms.

What is now Illinois was inhabited for thousands of years by various indigenous cultures, including the advanced civilization centered in the Cahokia region. The French were the first Europeans to arrive, settling near the Mississippi River in the 17th century, in the region they called Illinois Country , part of the sprawling colony of New France.

Following U. Illinois was part of the United States' oldest territory, the Northwest Territory , and in it achieved statehood.

The Erie Canal brought increased commercial activity in the Great Lakes, and the small settlement of Chicago became one of the fastest growing cities in the world, benefiting from its location as one of the few natural harbors in south-western Lake Michigan.

In the mid 19th century, the Illinois and Michigan Canal and a sprawling railroad network greatly facilitated trade, commerce, and settlement, making the state a transportation hub for the nation.

By , the growth of industrial jobs in the northern cities, and coal mining in the central and southern areas, attracted immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe. The Great Migration from the South established a large community of African Americans in the state, particularly Chicago, who founded the city's famous jazz and blues cultures.

Three U. Grant , and Barack Obama ; additionally, Ronald Reagan , whose political career was based in California , was born and raised in the state. Today, Illinois honors Lincoln with its official state slogan Land of Lincoln , which has been displayed on its license plates since American scholars previously thought the name Illinois meant 'man' or 'men' in the Miami-Illinois language , with the original iliniwek transformed via French into Illinois.

The name Illiniwek has also been said to mean 'tribe of superior men', [17] which is a false etymology. The current spelling form, Illinois , began to appear in the early s, when French colonists had settled in the western area. The Illinois's name for themselves, as attested in all three of the French missionary-period dictionaries of Illinois, was Inoka , of unknown meaning and unrelated to the other terms.

During the early part of the Paleozoic Era , the area that would one day become Illinois was submerged beneath a shallow sea and located near the Equator. Diverse marine life lived at this time, including trilobites , brachiopods , and crinoids.

Changing environmental conditions led to the formation of large coal swamps in the Carboniferous. Illinois was above sea level for at least part of the Mesozoic , but by its end was again submerged by the Western Interior Seaway. This receded by the Eocene Epoch. During the Pleistocene Epoch , vast ice sheets covered much of Illinois, with only the Driftless Area remaining exposed.

These glaciers carved the basin of Lake Michigan and left behind traces of ancient glacial lakes and moraines. American Indians of successive cultures lived along the waterways of the Illinois area for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. The Koster Site has been excavated and demonstrates 7, years of continuous habitation.

Cahokia , the largest regional chiefdom and Urban Center of the Pre-Columbian Mississippian culture , was located near present-day Collinsville, Illinois.

They built an urban complex of more than platform and burial mounds , a acre 20 ha plaza larger than 35 football fields, [21] and a woodhenge of sacred cedar, all in a planned design expressing the culture's cosmology. Monks Mound , the center of the site, is the largest Pre-Columbian structure north of the Valley of Mexico. It is ft 30 m high, ft m long, ft m wide, and covers The finely crafted ornaments and tools recovered by archaeologists at Cahokia include elaborate ceramics, finely sculptured stonework, carefully embossed and engraved copper and mica sheets, and one funeral blanket for an important chief fashioned from 20, shell beads.

These artifacts indicate that Cahokia was truly an urban center, with clustered housing, markets, and specialists in toolmaking, hide dressing, potting, jewelry making, shell engraving, weaving and salt making.

The civilization vanished in the 15th century for unknown reasons, but historians and archeologists have speculated that the people depleted the area of resources.

Many indigenous tribes engaged in constant warfare. According to Suzanne Austin Alchon, "At one site in the central Illinois River valley, one third of all adults died as a result of violent injuries. The small French settlements continued, although many French migrated west to Ste.

Genevieve and St. Louis, Missouri , to evade British rule. A few British soldiers were posted in Illinois, but few British or American settlers moved there, as the Crown made it part of the territory reserved for Indians west of the Appalachians, and then part of the British Province of Quebec.

In a compromise, Virginia and other states that made various claims ceded the area to the new United States in the s and it became part of the Northwest Territory , administered by the federal government and later organized as states. The Illinois-Wabash Company was an early claimant to much of Illinois. The Illinois Territory was created on February 3, , with its capital at Kaskaskia , an early French settlement.

During the discussions leading up to Illinois's admission to the Union , the proposed northern boundary of the state was moved twice. Such a boundary would have left Illinois with no shoreline on Lake Michigan at all. However, as Indiana had successfully been granted a 10 mi 16 km northern extension of its boundary to provide it with a usable lakefront, the original bill for Illinois statehood, submitted to Congress on January 23, , stipulated a northern border at the same latitude as Indiana's, which is defined as 10 miles north of the southernmost extremity of Lake Michigan.

However, the Illinois delegate, Nathaniel Pope , wanted more, and lobbied to have the boundary moved further north. This shift added 8, sq mi 22, km 2 to the state, including the lead mining region near Galena. More importantly, it added nearly 50 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and the Chicago River.

Pope and others envisioned a canal that would connect the Chicago and Illinois rivers and thus connect the Great Lakes to the Mississippi. In , Illinois became the 21st U. The capital remained at Kaskaskia, headquartered in a small building rented by the state. In , Vandalia became the capital, and over the next 18 years, three separate buildings were built to serve successively as the capitol building.

In , the state legislators representing Sangamon County , under the leadership of state representative Abraham Lincoln, succeeded in having the capital moved to Springfield , [32] where a fifth capitol building was constructed. A sixth capitol building was erected in , which continues to serve as the Illinois capitol today. Though it was ostensibly a " free state ", there was nonetheless slavery in Illinois. The ethnic French had owned black slaves since the s, and American settlers had already brought slaves into the area from Kentucky.

Slavery was nominally banned by the Northwest Ordinance, but that was not enforced for those already holding slaves. When Illinois became a sovereign state in , the Ordinance no longer applied, and about slaves were held in the state.

As the southern part of the state, later known as "Egypt" or "Little Egypt", [33] [34] was largely settled by migrants from the South, the section was hostile to free blacks. Settlers were allowed to bring slaves with them for labor, but, in , state residents voted against making slavery legal. Still, most residents opposed allowing free blacks as permanent residents. Some settlers brought in slaves seasonally or as house servants.

In , John A. Logan helped pass a law to prohibit all African Americans, including freedmen , from settling in the state. The winter of — is called the "Winter of the Deep Snow"; a sudden, deep snowfall blanketed the state, making travel impossible for the rest of the winter, and many travelers perished.

Several severe winters followed, including the "Winter of the Sudden Freeze". On December 20, , a fast-moving cold front passed through, freezing puddles in minutes and killing many travelers who could not reach shelter. The adverse weather resulted in crop failures in the northern part of the state. The southern part of the state shipped food north, and this may have contributed to its name: " Little Egypt ", after the Biblical story of Joseph in Egypt supplying grain to his brothers. It represents the end of Indian resistance to white settlement in the Chicago region.

The survivors were forced back to Iowa. By , the Latter Day Saints had founded a utopian city called Nauvoo. Located in Hancock County along the Mississippi River, Nauvoo flourished, and soon rivaled Chicago for the position of the state's largest city.

Following a succession crisis Latter Day Saints , Brigham Young led most Latter Day Saints out of Illinois in a mass exodus to present-day Utah ; after close to six years of rapid development, Nauvoo rapidly declined afterward. After it was established in , Chicago gained prominence as a Great Lakes port, and then as an Illinois and Michigan Canal port after , and as a rail hub soon afterward. By , Chicago was Illinois's largest city.

In , after lobbying by Dorothea L. Dix , Illinois became one of the first states to establish a system of state-supported treatment of mental illness and disabilities, replacing local almshouses. Dix came into this effort after having met J. King, a Jacksonville, Illinois businessman, who invited her to Illinois, where he had been working to build an asylum for the insane.

This marks the beginning of Illinois's southern border with Kentucky , which runs along the northern shoreline of the Ohio River. The northeastern border of Illinois lies in Lake Michigan , within which Illinois shares a water boundary with the state of Michigan , as well as Wisconsin and Indiana.

In the United States, Amazon runs their own program, 'Take Back', which allows owners to print out a prepaid shipping label, which can be used to return the device for disposal.

On July 17, , Amazon withdrew from sale two e-books by George Orwell , Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four , refunding the purchase price to those who had bought them, and remotely deleted these titles from purchasers' devices without warning using a backdoor after discovering that the publisher lacked rights to publish these books.

The two books were protected by copyright in the United States, but they were in the public domain in Canada, Australia and other countries. Ars Technica argued that the deletion violated the Kindle's terms of service, which stated in part: []. Upon your payment of the applicable fees set by Amazon, Amazon grants you the non-exclusive right to keep a permanent copy of the applicable Digital Content and to view, use and display such Digital Content an unlimited number of times, solely on the Device or as authorized by Amazon as part of the Service and solely for your personal, non-commercial use.

Amazon spokesman Drew Herdener said that the company is "changing our systems so that in the future we will not remove books from customers' devices in these circumstances. Bezos said the action was "stupid", and that the executives at Amazon "deserve the criticism received".

Bruguier argued that Amazon had violated its terms of service by remotely deleting the copy of Nineteen Eighty-Four he purchased, in the process preventing him from accessing annotations he had written. Gawronski's copy of the e-book was also deleted without his consent, and found Amazon used deceit in an email exchange. The complaint, which sought class-action status, asked for both monetary and injunctive relief. For what Amazon describes as "a brief period of time", the books were unavailable for redownload by users who had already purchased them. This ability was restored after it was brought to Amazon's attention; however, no remote deletion took place.

In October , Amazon suspended the account of a Norwegian woman who purchased her Kindle in the United Kingdom , and the company deleted every e-book on her Kindle. Amazon claimed that she had violated their terms of service but did not specify what she had done wrong. Computer programmer Richard Stallman criticized the Kindle, [] [] citing Kindle terms of service which can censor users, which require the user's identification, and that can have a negative effect on independent book distributors; he also cited reported restrictions on Kindle users, as well the ability for Amazon to delete e-books and update software without the users' permission.

Amazon had also announced that it has sold several million Kindles in the country and that China became the world's biggest regional market for the Kindle in However, it was reported that Chinese consumers prefer using their smartphones over e-readers, notwithstanding competition from Tencent, Alibaba, JD. Domestically developed e-book readers from brands like Xiaomi, iReader and Onyx Boox also offer added competition to the Kindle.

Only the Kindle 10 had remained available for sale while other models like the Paper White, Oasis and Kids Edition had become out of stock.
